Jennie wasnât sure what was bothering Owen, but something definitely was. Did he not like taking advice? Couldnât he see that the preacher and his wife were only trying to help? Or was it something else, something about her?
She fiddled with her small reticule and wondered if she should spend some money on a few necessities. But her mind kept wandering back to what Preacher Jo and Annie had told them. They made it sound as if they expected them to argue. But how could you argue with a person you didnât know well?
Or maybe that was the point. But she wasnât the first mail-order bride to marry in this town, and might not be the last. From what the Cooke women and Owenâs mother had told her, every one of those brides was happily married, and most of them werenât much older than her when they wed. So what was the problem? What did they see that she and Owen didnât?
Her mind ran circles around the question as Owen helped her down from the wagon and escorted her into the mercantile. âWell, if it isnât the happy couple,â Wilfred said jovially. âEither of you care for a peppermint stick? Itâs on the house.â
Jennie watched Owenâs eyes light up. âSure, Wilfred. Weâll each have one.â His head snapped around to her. âOh. Uh, do you like peppermint?â
She smiled to reassure him. âYes, thank you.â Maybe this was one of the things Preacher Jo was referring to. They just didnât know each other, and though she found Owen attractive, that didnât mean he wouldnât drive her crazy. By the same token, she might drive him mad too â she could be picky, fussy, spoiled even. But that was back when she had things, when she had money. That wasnât the case now.
Her eyes suddenly widened.
âSomething the matter?â Wilfred asked with concern.
Owen studied her. âJennie?â
âIâm fine.â She reached for the peppermint stick Wilfred offered.
Owen studied her a moment before taking his candy, and continued to watch her afterward.
She fidgeted. For some reason she suddenly felt nervous and awkward. âWhat is it?â
He shrugged and sucked on his candy.
She took a calming breath and tried to distract herself by looking around the mercantile. Score one for the preacher, she thought. He was right, they were facing a challenge - and neither of them seemed ready to admit it. She was resolved to make this work, and Heaven forbid there were any obstacles she couldnât handle. Owen probably felt the same, so together they should be able to take care of anything. The problem was, did either of them have any idea what âeverythingâ would entail?
Jennie sucked on her peppermint as she perused the displays, and prayed for wisdom. She had a feeling she and Owen would need a lot of it.
